Stage One: Often, the Story Exists Before the Script

Which story is worth the bet has already been settled by someone before anyone calls “action” on a short drama set. A book often appears at the start of the process when you follow a few hits backward. ReelShort’s Breaking the Ice, a 2024 hockey romance centered on a secret child, is drawn from the novel Shutout by Jami Davenport. On November 1, 2025, ReelShort launched Bound by Honor, a mafia arranged-marriage series adapted from a novel by Cora Reilly. In Korea, a web novel and webtoon are the source of the 2026 office romance reel shorts app Quiet in the Office!, which carries a 19+ age rating. Several app owners also operate reading businesses, which keeps source material close at hand: Crazy Maple Studio makes the interactive-story app Chapters, Holywater runs the books app My Passion, and GoodShort’s Google Play developer name is GoodNovel. When no book exists, writers rely on tested tropes such as billionaire romance, revenge, identity reveals and family drama. Every scene has to deliver a reveal, a reversal or a threat within seconds, so the script’s job is to compress a long drama story into scenes like that.

Stage Two: Casting Familiar Faces

The format’s economics surface on screen in casting. Scanning the cast lists for short series on IMDb, you see the same names appearing again and again. Noah Fearnley fronted ReelShort’s werewolf romance Fated to the Alpha in 2024 and came back in 2025 for Love on the Sidelines, a second-chance story about a former football star. On GoodShort, Rosa Singerman starred in both Blood and Bones of the Disowned Daughter and Kidnapped by the Mafia in 2025, the second opposite Franky Cammarata. A lead with a following on one app comes to the next title with a head start, which matters a great deal when a series has only a handful of free episodes to win you over. Over in Los Angeles, DramaBox runs a production team. TheWrap reported in October 2024 that about 75 percent of ReelShort’s users were women, so studios are also casting with a particular viewer in mind.

Stage Three: Seventy Episodes Filmed in About Eight Days

Per TheWrap, a Western short drama is typically shot in eight to ten days at a cost of $150,000 to $300,000 per series. A similar picture comes from Wikipedia’s overview of the format, which sets a seven- to ten-day shoot at $150,000 to $250,000 for 50 to 70 or more episodes. Close to nine episodes’ worth of material every working day: that is what a 70-episode series shot in eight days means, by simple arithmetic. Chinese producers selling abroad have reported lower numbers still. Jiuzhou Culture pegged a 70-episode series at $100,000 to $150,000 in China Daily reporting from January 2024. That works out to roughly $1,400 to $2,100 per finished episode. Dubbed Chinese adaptations made up about 80 percent of the more than 600 titles Jiuzhou said it had made for overseas markets, and original overseas productions made up 20 percent. Dubbing lets a studio recycle a finished domestic series, so the expensive shoot happens only once.

Stage Four: Trimming to 60–100 Seconds

Composed vertically at 9:16 for a phone, the footage is cut into episodes of 60 to 100 seconds in the edit suite. An episode of that length has room for a turn or two of plot, so each episode is designed around a question that the next episode promises to answer. The house style is the cliffhanger: the mechanism that carries you from one installment to the next. Put together, those segments make a 70-episode series roughly 70 to 117 minutes of screen time. Episode counts differ widely by title; GoodShort’s official pages, for example, list 30 episodes for My Stolen Crown: I Am the Dragon Queen and 100 for The Dragon King’s Return. Since ReelShort also operates official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion, the same footage can reach viewers who never open the app. In short, editors are cutting video dramas for multiple screens at once.

Stage Five: Deciding Where the Paywall Falls

The last creative decision doubles as a commercial one. Under the standard model described by TheWrap, the first eight to ten episodes are free. In 2024 TheWrap counted the first eight episodes as free, whereas ReelShort’s own blog places its free run at usually five to 15 episodes. From then on, episodes unlock with coins; ReelShort’s blog lists the standard cost of an episode as about 60 coins. You can also earn coins by watching ads, with one ad unlocking two premium episodes according to the same blog, or buy a weekly VIP pass that costs about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 and renews automatically. What your store shows may be different, since prices vary by country, platform and promotion. Paywalls falling right on a cliffhanger rank among the most common complaints about these apps, along with auto-renewing weekly passes and rising coin costs, which is why placement is the contentious part. Tools that promise a way around the wall, such as coin generators and modded “unlimited coins” apps, are unofficial and best left alone.

Stage Six: Animated and AI-Generated Series

In the latest production stage, there is no camera at all. ReelShort now offers animated motion comics alongside its live-action lineup. Arthur Lancaster, the lead of the 58-episode family saga The Lost Heir, loses his memory while saving his brother, grows up on a farm as “Johnny” and in the end unmasks the foster sister who kept framing him. Shattered Vows, a 52-episode ReelShort title from 2026, lists no cast: it is an AI-generated animated motion comic about heiress Vanessa Windsor seeking revenge on the husband and best friend who helped her sister’s killer get away. A separate 58-episode ShortMax series has the same title, and the two should not be confused. No app has gone further than DramaWave: 36Kr reported that more than 80 percent of its newly released content is AI-generated and that the app’s annualized revenue passed $700 million by the second quarter of 2026. AI video dramas have spread beyond the apps too, as Fruit Love Island, an AI-made parody of Love Island starring fruit contestants, showed on TikTok in March 2026 before critics widely branded it “AI slop”.

Stage Seven: A Hollywood Studio Enters the Line

Legacy studios have noticed, and the plainest example is Fox Entertainment. In October 2025, Holywater, the Kyiv-founded company behind the My Drama app, received an equity investment from Fox. Billionaire Blackmail, Bound by Obsession and My Heart’s Offside are among the Fox-produced series already on the app, and Fox has also committed to making more than 200 vertical titles over two years. Holywater raised a further $22 million in January 2026 in a round led by Horizon Capital, and My Drama took the 2025 Webby Award for Best Streaming Service. When a network-scale producer commits to that volume, it suggests the eight-day shoot has shifted from curiosity to line item.

The Production Line at a Quick Glance

Place the stages side by side and the logic of the business snaps into focus. The shoot is the fixed, expensive block, and much of the rest is arranged around it. Scripts tend to arrive pre-tested as novels or familiar tropes, casting relies on known faces, and the edit is built around cliffhangers that feed a paywall. Fans who look up a “reel short drama” usually have ReelShort titles in mind, yet TheWrap and Wikipedia describe broadly similar methods across the category. The table below relies only on publicly reported figures to summarize typical time and cost at each stage. It says so rather than guessing where no reliable figure has been published.
